The Economic Cost of Housing Supply Constraints in Germany

This paper quantifies the macroeconomic impact of housing supply constraints in Germany’s largest labor markets using a spatial equilibrium framework. We find that German GDP could have been 0.31 percentage points higher had housing markets in the 20 largest cities been as elastic as in the rest of the country over the last ten years. These findings demonstrate that stalled housing supply in the most in-demand areas imposes measurable costs on overall economic output.

Inland connectedness and commodity exports during the first wave of globalization

We explore the impact of railway access on ports, using newly digitised trade data for 19th-century Denmark. We observe a spatial concentration of international exports in response to the transport cost change. Ports with greater capacity to accommodate steamships emerge as hubs.

Striking evidence: The impact of railway strikes on competition from intercity bus services in Germany
(with Alexander Sandkamp and Matthias Beestermöller)
This paper investigates the impact of rail service interruptions on customer switching behaviour. Using unique booking data on intercity bus services, we exploit regional variation in rail service cancellations during a strike to show that the disruption in rail transport increases bus ticket sales. The effect persists beyond the strike, indicating that travellers do not return to their originally preferred transport mode. It is particularly pronounced for passengers travelling on weekends. The findings suggest that customers were previously under-experimenting. From a policy perspective, our results highlight the need to incentivise experimentation to foster competition, facilitate transformative change and raise welfare.
